KUSI TV refuses to have me on because I’m transgender

I am so upset. The reporter from the San Diego Reader, Ernie Grimm, contacted me a few weeks ago to ask if I would do a television interview with him when the story came out on the cover of the reader about my performance Becoming Dragon. I accepted and the reader’s publicist contacted me about TV interview dates. They scheduled an interview with me for this morning with an 8:50am arrival time for a 9:20am live air interview. I arrive on time, conservatively dressed with a long skirt, tights and a scarf up to my neck. We chat cordially in the break room first and then move to the green room. The publicist goes to talk to the anchor, and returns at 9:18AM to say “Micha I have some uncomfortable news. I’m so sorry, but because of how you’re dressed, they can’t have you on the show.” She goes on to tell me how they want to cover the Second Life aspect of the story and not talk about transgender issues at all.

This is absolutely an act of gender based discrimination. Imagine if they had said “I’m sorry, but because you’re a woman, we can’t have you on. We just wanted to talk about Second Life.” It is also very similar to them saying something like “I’m sorry, but because of the ay your face looks, we can’t have you on. We don’t want to talk about the fact that you’re black, just about Second Life,” if I was a person of color.

Then the anchorwoman comes into the green room to personally apologize to me and says its not her, it’s her “incredibly right wing republican boss” who is to blame. I do not say anything in response and look away. I refuse to say that this is acceptable. Admittedly, I laughed at the news at first, nervous and not sure of what to say. As I walk out the door, angry and upset, I realize that I should have told them right then and there that this is an act of discrimination.

I am disgusted. You can contact KUSI to tell them what you think of their transphobic, homophobic ways here, the show I was to be on is Good Morning San Diego:

They proceeded to do the interview with Ernie, trying to avoid the issue, but even he couldn’t avoid saying that the project was about my, in his words “transgendering process”, and they both referred to me as “he” and with male pronouns for the entire interview, completely invisiblizing me. I should have never agreed to do the interview. I was actually up until almost 4am because I was so nervous and excited about doing the interview. I re-read Gloria Anzaldua for inspiration and read up on other cultures with traditions of cross-species transitions such as hinduism and buddhism. At least that was time well spent.

  • This is an outrage. I’m forwarding this to every relevant list-serve I’m on. I’m also a member of SAME (San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality). Let me know if you want to organize a protest of KUSI or something. Also feel free to come to our next meeting this Tuesday at the Bamboo Lounge at 6 p.m. We’re democratic and trans-inclusive.

Discriminating against transgender people can destroy the movement for gay rights. Thank you so much for your story. We must fight against this kind of shit and build solidarity with all oppressed people!

  • Sad day when a supposedly unbiased news organization can’t even have an interview in private which didn’t need to be broadcast and therefore subjecting you to public scrutiny. They should have extended the courtesy of at least conducting it like mature adults and not some timid childish republicrat. Talk about a waste of both of your time….

  • This story seems to be growing legs; the top six results of a Google search for “KUSI +Transgender” are about this story and it is appearing in Bay Area media watch sites, URNotalone’s blog, the Yahoo TransgenderNews Group and activist blogs all over the country.

Hopefully the negative attention and calls to advertisers who use KUSI and the Reader will at the very least keep them occupied with damage control and slow their obvious attempts to paint LGBT people in an unfair light at every opportunity.

I don’t hold out any hope for actually influencing the minds of the likes of religionist ideologues like Jim Holman, Ernie Grimm or Bill McKinnon, but I’ll settle for affecting their pocketbooks.

  • Just wanted to correct something- KUSI’s majority shareholder is *Mike* McKinnon…his son Mark had this to say when interviewed about the family business-

“We refuse to alter the way we report the news in order to please any particular group of people,” Mr. McKinnon said.”

    Ironic to say the least.

glad to that kusi is being exposed in indy media and the word is getting out. don’t let them silence you micha! keep getting your voice out there its vital for trans people and the whole LGBT community (in my humble opinion). i hope people in solidarity and support for you continue to stand by your side and actions are taken in our community to hold them accountable. if you had a press release on your blog tons of people could forward it on all over the world. just an idea. love you friend

  • That is so fucking disgusting I can’t stand it. I was so excited for you, and I can’t imagine how you’re feeling, but I can tell you it really hurts to have someone do that to someone I care a lot about.

I’m seriously so mad right now I don’t even know what to say other than that I’m going to be on the phone tomorrow until I talk to whoever made that decision, and it’s not going to be pleasant.

  • thanks everyone. its really heartwarming to know that you’re all keepin an eye out for me. :-)

i’ve been in touch with the transgender law center and they’re looking into the legality of this. that’s what i should’ve said to them, “you’ll be hearing from my lawyer”. fuckers.

  • wow does that suck. i already sent them an email. it’s really fucking typical though: i’ve had it happen when someone wanted me to talk about sex, or relationships, or even about my writing: once they realize trans is involved, it’s all of a sudden “too complicated” for them to do their soundbyte bullshit.

    but gloria anzaldua rocks.

  • i think this will raise more questions than an actual interview on Tv!. your in the front line..

really you shouldn’t be sad, angry maybe but this sort of thing needs to happen so those who do discriminate are caught red handed! Are weeded out..are put in the spotlight.
Maybe it highlights a difference between main stream television, ‘media under control’ with that of Indi Virtual World
Media where this sort of thing wouldnt happen.(and safe guard it happing within virtual media)
Treat it as an interesting (yet disturbing) tangent of your work.

  • Am I the only one who smells a rat here in the fact that the segment was packaged, pitched and scheduled as an interview with the principal of the project weeks ahead of time, but Micha’s gender ID and transition only became an issue minutes before the segment was to air?

Since the segment went ahead and still touched on Micha’s transgender status, is it too far of a stretch to wonder if Ernie Grimm didn’t plan it this way all along, using the promise of an interview with Micha as bait to sell his idea knowing full well that she would not be allowed to appear and he would again be in a position to speak for her and purposefully disrespect her gender ID?

Ernie has an “incredibly right wing republican boss” as well, and he had to know that there would be an issue with presenting a transperson on KUSI anywhere outside of the Jerry Springer show…I also notice that any mention of Ernie expressing surprise or disappointment at Micha’s treatment and exclusion from the segment is markedly absent in her description of the event…and being the “respectful” person he is one would expect Ernie to say something

  • Micha,

I’m a gay blogger in San Diego. I’m looking at this story and it stinks. You were ambushed by anti-GLBT, anti-woman elements of the radical religious right. Can you answer a couple of questions?

    Send me an email.

    Thanks. Hang in there.
