Goodbye Privacy, Hello Twitter! (and identica)

Update 12:35am 9-28-2008: It seems like identi.ca is way cooler, is free software, protects your privacy and allows you to have access to your own data! But as far as I can tell they don’t support SMS yet. Once they do, I’m switching!

Note: my blog is being really weird and flaky today, so if you go to a page and get a weird rss feed looking thing, just hit reload. Seems to help!

Okay, not really. It’ll be interesting to me to see how a privacy nut like myself can use something like Twitter. I just hope some of my friends will sign up, because not many people I know use it and updates about folks in far away cities is just not that useful. Although I do plan to blog my time in Second Life for my 365 hour immersion in December, so perhaps I’ll twitter from there too. So if I pestered you in the last 24 hours to join flickr, I hope you do!!!

Anyway, so bye bye privacy, hello twitter! And while I’m at it, here are tons of other ways I surveil myself and you can watch!

The fact that I use all these services, and that they’re all owned by corporations, makes me think a lot about the Franklin Street Statement that Autonomo.us put out. Its kind of sad to think that all that data is in someone else’s hands and will probably go away shortly. Especially with the way that everything suddenly looks temporary in light of the last few days financial news. Greenspan says its a “once in a century” economic crisis. What’s next? I wish I knew more about macroeconomics and could understand it better. Ok, I understand AIG being short on cash because of other huge bailouts causing lots of people to cash in on insurance policie, but really it all sounds like one huge corporation buying another.
