Welcome to the City Heights Free Skool...

Learning and Building Community Together

City Heights is made of people with many diverse talents and skills. We are a community with incredible resources to share. The Free Skool is an effort to bring together the diverse ideas, talents, skills and resources of our community because too often a lack of communication keeps us apart. Join us and attend or facilitate a class!

Principles

  • Inclusiveness of all, regardless of educational experience
  • Everyone is a teacher and everyone is a student
  • Community-based learning
  • Providing learning opportunities in a free, open and non-hierarchical environment
  • Integrating practical skills and personal experiences into education
  • Classes are FREE

borderlands hacklab at the Free Skool needs volunteers to stay open for summer 2008!

It's summer! Hooray! And that means that it's hot in San Diego, and that lots of people are traveling to various protests like the G8 in japan and the upcoming RNC/DNC protests. Also, people are moving in and out of the Free Skool, so thinkgs are a bit in flux.

Basically, right now we only have one volunteer to cover sundays and open the lab and that's not enough to stay open. We've been here for a year and regularly have kids from the neighborhood come to use the computers. It helps if you speak spanish, but its not necessary at all. We're so in need that we just need someone to open the doors and be here from 1-3pm. If there's another time that works for you, we can check the calendar and put out signs and open when you can come, but we have people who regularly come on sundays, so that's best.

We are creating the world we want to see instead of asking for it or waiting for it. Help us do that!

If you can help, please email us at sdhacklab A+ lists d0t riseup d0t net, or call the city heights free skool at 619-528-8060.

CANCELED!!_____Sorry____Bikes Del Pueblo: A Bike Kitchen Benefit

Friends - Chicana Perk just got a big ol' fine from the city for having events w/o 'permits'. So, we can't enjoy the music of our friends and each other's company tonight. The Cops demanded that they cancel off all their events! We couldn't find another venue in two days so we have to cancel. I'm sorry if this message doesn't get to you in time.

Shaping Our City: Stopping Paramilitaries and Bioprofiteers in San Diego

To get involved resisting the upcoming BIO conference. The next meeting and craft party is Thursday, May 22nd at 7:30pm at the City Heights Free Skool, 4246 Wightman St, San Diego, CA 92105.

Bring your ideas for flyers, zines, posters, blockprints, stencils, shirts, bags, banners, flags, anything to make about biotech, gardening, diy health care and the upcoming biotech conference in san diego!

On June 19th, there will be a "Say Goodbye to Biotech" party in the park across the street from the convention center from 1-6pm, including a Really Free Market, workshops, performances, music and free food from Food Not Bombs!

Another paramilitary group is working on setting up shop in San Diego, Blackwater. Of course, these are far more real paramilitaries than the Minutemen, with far more resources, more government support and much more dangerous. Blackwater has also recently tried to setup a training facility in Ohio, having expressed their hope to become the new paramilitary force on the US borders, backing up the border patrol, adding to the unjust harassment, detention and murder of innocent people trying to migrate.

In San Diego, a large network of organizations, coalitions and people has come together to keep Blackwater from setting up shop here. So far, they’ve been successful, helping to mobilize the city of Potrero and kicking Blackwater out. Though while that was going on, Blackwater was secretly working on setting up a training facility in Otay Mesa, right near the border crossing in San Diego, getting permits under other names and operating in secret. This facility recently came to light and was planned to open in June...

The World According to Monsanto - 108 Min.

On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television (ARTE – French-German cultural tv channel) by French journalist and film maker Marie-Monique Robin, The World According to Monsanto - A documentary that Americans won't ever see. The gigantic biotech corporation Monsanto is threatening to destroy the agricultural biodiversity which has served mankind for thousands of years...

Volunteer at the Free Skool! Participate!

The City Heights Free Skool is an all volunteer, collectively run project, where we all put in our time to create a space for creating the kind of educational environment we want to see. Volunteers all have an equal say in the decision making process, in planning and organizing the skool.

We need volunteers! In particular, in three areas: childcare, english teachers, spanish speakers with basic computer skills.

- Childcare: many of the people who attend the City Heights Free Skool have children, and it is difficult for them to learn and watch their children at the same time. We have some childcare volunteers now, but we really need more. Come play music, paint and be silly with some wonderful kids! We specifically need childcare during english class on wed nights from 7:30-9:30 and during the Hacklab on sunday afternoons from 1-3pm.

- English Teachers: One of our teachers for our english classes is going out of town for the summer. Do you speak english and spanish? If so, come by and help people from the neighborhood of city heights learn english on Wednesday nights.

- Spanish speaking people who can use a computer: the borderlands hacklab needs volunteers who can speak spanish well and who know basic computer usage. Most people who come to the hacklab want to know basic skills: how to use a mouse, how to work with a window, how to use email, how to use office applications. If you know how to do these things and can speak spanish, we can really use your help on Sunday afternoons.

If you can help out, please email
