Welcome to the City Heights Free Skool

Learning and Building Community Together

City Heights is made of people with many diverse talents and skills. We are a community with incredible resources to share. The Free Skool is an effort to bring together the diverse ideas, talents, skills and resources of our community because too often a lack of communication keeps us apart. Join us and attend or facilitate a class!

Food starts at 6:30 pm. The bands start at 7 pm. They are:

Free Skool Cafe!

This Friday, November 14th, we'd like to invite you to the City Heights Free Skool Cafe, a dinner and movie that will benefit grassroots projects in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Food starts at 6:30 pm. There will be bowls of amazing vegan Somalian food for sale $4 (or $3 if you bring your own plate.) The woman who is going to be making the food is named Amina and sets up a food stall at the City Heights Farmers' Market on Saturdays. There will also be different kinds of teas for sale, provided by Kooky of the Casas Saludables Cafe. Come support affordable, healthy vegan food in City Heights!

We'll be showing The Take at 7 pm, a documentary about workers who took over and collectivized their factories in the aftermath of Argentina's 2001 economic crisis.

All proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing video cameras for Proyecto Autogestion, which collaborates with the Comité de Defensa de los Derechos del Pueblo (CODEP, Committee Organized in Defense of the People's Rights) in Oaxaca, Mexico. During the popular rebellion in Oaxaca in 2006, the City Heights Free Skool raised funds for cameras that were used during the making of the documentary, "El Machete", which was filmed and edited by indigenous women and youth from communities in Oaxaca. It documents a more profound look at the day to day struggles for land, water, transportation, culture, dignity, justice, liberty, and peace.

Volunteer at the Free Skool! Participate!

The City Heights Free Skool is an all volunteer, collectively run project, where we all put in our time to create a space for creating the kind of educational environment we want to see. Volunteers all have an equal say in the decision making process, in planning and organizing the skool.

We need volunteers! In particular, in three areas: childcare, English teachers, Spanish speakers with basic computer skills.

Childcare

Many of the people who attend the City Heights Free Skool have children, and it is difficult for them to learn and watch their children at the same time. We have some childcare volunteers now, but we really need more. Come play music, paint and be silly with some wonderful kids! We specifically need childcare during English class on Wednesday nights from 7:30 - 9:30 pmand during the Hacklab on sunday afternoons from 1 - 3 pm.

English Facilitators

Do you speak English and Spanish? If so, come by and help people from the neighborhood of City Heights learn english on Wednesday nights.

Spanish speaking people who can use a computer

The borderlands hacklab needs volunteers who can speak Spanish well and who know basic computer usage. Most people who come to the hacklab want to know basic skills: how to use a mouse, how to work with a window, how to use email, how to use office applications. If you know how to do these things and can speak spanish, we can really use your help on Sunday afternoons.

Hacklab is Open

Dear Everyone,
Hacklab will be open from 1-3pm at the FreeSkool on Sundays, again.
Yay.

Good-bye signatures of happiness,
Hacklabbers

borderlands hacklab closed until further notice

Due to a lack of volunteers, the borderlands Hacklab at the City Heights Free Skool will be closing until further notice. It is likely that we will reopen in late august, after some hacklab volunteers have returned from traveling, but right now the project is not sustainable.

It often seems to me that when projects lose members and are too small to be sustainable, it becomes more important to put energy into reorganizing, rethinking and finding new people than to keep slogging on with the same focus, trying to hold the project together with just one or two people. If there isn't enough enthusiasm in San Diego for a community based hacklab and a collective dedicated to providing tech solutions for radical projects and for people usually excluded from tech culture like women, people of color and queer people, then maybe it's time has come and gone.

I hope that's not the case. I hope people just haven't gotten around to telling us they'd like to volunteer yet. If you'd like to see the borderlands Hacklab at the City Heights Free Skool continue to stay open for the residents of City Heights and anyone else who needs free access to computers and internet, please email us at sdhacklab A+ lists d()t riseup [d0T) net
