Lunchtime Art: A talk with Željko Blaće

CRCA is pleased to host a lunchtime talk with Croatian artist, curator and manager, Željko Blaće. We invite you to come by Thursday, Jan. 12 at 12:30pm to hear Mr. Blaće discuss his latest streaming media projects.

Location: Calit2 Building, CRCA Research Neighborhood Room 1601
When: Thursday, January 12, 2005 at 12:30pm

Blaće is interested in media arts and aesthetics particularly in the context of streaming media practices and visual observations. He is working with UC faculty including Natalie Jeremijenko and Lev Manovich to develop and present a streaming media exhibition and symposium in the fall of 2006. The project Silent*Observers (S*O) is a new media project series being developed and produced by an international consortium of artists, managers and theorists. The primary focus is on the artistic transposing of electronically gathered data representing local ambience and dynamics distributed via the global digital network. The participants involved in Silent*Observers are developing a number of connected activities that would explore and demonstrate the artistic potential of these new technologies as well as comment on their social and cultural impact.

Željko Blaće (1976, Čapljina - Republic of Bosnia & Herzegovina) is active in new media culture scene of Central Europe since 1996 (in Croatia) as web designer, artist and journalist. In recent years he has moved into the international media arts scene via roles as organizer, researcher and curator. He is active in the media-culture organizations: LABinary (co-editor of print newsletter), radioActive (event organizer and web developer) and Multimedia Institute (full time employed as programs and projects co-coordinator, executive board member). He is a contributor for cultural programs of the national radio and TV ("Transfer" and "Triptih"); and occasionally writes for ICT magazines, in the cultural magazine Zarez, and on radioActive and linux.hr web portals. Blaće promotes non-profit net projects, and is working on strengthening the impact of NGO sector on Croatian netspace (both in terms of infrastructure and legislation).

The Swiss Army knife has taken a leap into cyberspace with the latest addition to its ever-expanding range of tools.

One of the knife’s two makers has released a version with a memory key that plugs into computers. It will be presented this week at the CeBIT technology fair in Hanover, Germany. The “Memory USB” army knife includes a “flash memory stick”, a piece of technology which has become increasingly popular with computer users over the past few months.

Haut, of UFO fame, was 83

Erin Taylor
Record Staff Writer

Though he wasn’t an alien fanatic, the man who helped found the International UFO Museum in Roswell always believed that whatever landed in a farmer’s field near the city in 1947 was “not of this earth,” his daughter Julie Shuster said.

Walter Haut, who was an Army lieutenant and spokesman for the Roswell Army Air Field the night of that discovery, died Thursday at the age of 83. Haut, along with Glenn Dennis and Max Littell, founded the International UFO Museum in 1991.

Haut issued a news release about the report of a recovered flying saucer on July 8, 1947, on orders from base commander Col. William Blanchard.
