*Bits.Atoms.Neurons.Genes* Micro_Gestures at the Edge of Invisibility will be an On/Off line space for MFA artists in the Visual Arts Department at UCSD to explore and present works at the edge of invisibility, at the edge of the digital and biological, at the edge of micro-robotics and nano-art, from in-virtu to in-vivo works and back.

This guy installed 13 satellite dishes on his house and gets up to 5,000 free stations...this seems like a good idea for the bang lab. Who will volunteer the space outside their window? link Write Comment (0 Comments) |

The Birth of Soft Torture CIA interrogation techniques—a history. By Rebecca Lemov Updated Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at 5:07 PM ET "In 1949, Cardinal Jószef Mindszenty appeared before the world's cameras to mumble his confession to treasonous crimes against the Hungarian church and state. For resisting communism, the World War II hero had been subjected for 39 days to sleep deprivation and humiliation, alternating with long hours of interrogation, by Russian-trained Hungarian police. His staged confession riveted the Central Intelligence Agency, which theorized in a security memorandum that Soviet-trained experts were controlling Mindszenty by "some unknown force." If the Communists had interrogation weapons that were evidently more subtle and effective than brute physical torture, the CIA decided, then it needed such weapons, too." link Write Comment (0 Comments) |

X Files Opened: The National Security Agency's UFO Investigations Unearthed By Leonard David "There is one question that persistently circles the community of Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) true-believers: If the government has nothing to hide, UFO fans often ask, then why is it keeping so many UFO records under lock and key? “Well, it turns out that the government does have something to hide, but it has nothing to do with extraterrestrials,” said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, D.C." link (to article) link (to affidavit) Write Comment (0 Comments) |

hi doctors, i wanted to make sure that you all heard about this. it has been circulating around but haven't seen much in the mainstream news. the basics: "dubbed "XCP," could leave Sony customers vulnerable to hackers intent on taking over target PCs. This is possible because the software, made by a U.K. company called First 4 Internet, contains a "rootkit" that hides files related to the antipiracy program so would-be pirates can't disable it. The problem: Once installed, it can hide any file, regardless of who puts it there. The software, which Sony included on 20 or more recent CDs, gives no warning of the rootkit, nor does it inform users that it prompts PCs to contact a Sony website for updated lyrics or art, and in the process, reveals the user's internet address and details about how often the CD has been played." from Boycott Sony by Dan Goodin also check: Sony Numbers Add Up to Trouble by Quinn Norton -dr. caleb Write Comment (1 Comments) |

"If you're looking for one of those famous, big-eyed alien abductors, try looking on the sides of milk cartons. The UFO cultural moment in America is long since over, having gone out with the Clintons and grunge rock in the 90s. Ironically, the force that killed the UFO fad is the same force that catapulted it to super-stardom: the Internet. And therein hangs a tale about how the Internet can conceal and reveal the truth." Doctors, Many years ago I buried a time capsule with my 6th grade class. I have no recollection of what I placed in there & I'm sure that I will never see it again. Fortunately, someone has developed an email time capsule in which you can write yourself a letter that will be sent to you in 1,2,5,10 or 20 years. This is of course an assumption that you will have the same email address, that there will be email, that there will be a civilization, etc., but its worth trying. LINK Write Comment (0 Comments) |

So beautiful & alien:
"The Thames Estuary Army Forts were constructed in 1942 to a design by Guy Maunsell, following the successful construction and deployment of the Naval Sea Forts. Their purpose was to provide anti-aircraft fire within the Thames Estuary area. Each fort consisted of a group of seven towers with a walkway connecting them all to the central control tower. The fort, when viewed as a whole, comprised one Bofors tower, a control tower, four gun towers and a searchlight tower. They were arranged in a very specific way, with the control tower at the centre, the Bofors and gun towers arranged in a semi-circular fashion around it and the searchlight tower positioned further away, but still linked directly to the control tower via a walkway. All the forts followed this plan and, in order of grounding, were called the Nore Army Fort, the Red Sands Army Fort and finally the Shivering Sands Army Fort. All three forts were in place by late 1943, but Nore is no longer standing. Construction of the towers was relatively quick, and they were easily floated out to sea and grounded in water no more than 30m (100ft) deep." LINK Write Comment (0 Comments) |

"This interactive tool is intended to give an idea of the
devastating blast effects of ground-level, shallow subsurface, and
low-altitude nuclear weapon detonations. It is relevant to traditional
nuclear weapons, potential terrorist attacks, and next generation
nuclear weapons such as "Bunker Busters" or "Robust Nuclear Earth
Penetrators" (RNEPs). (Despite the name, "Earth Penetrators" will not
penetrate far into hard rock and can be considered "surface" bursts
when using the bomb calculator.)"
